Employee Spotlight: Matthew Spencer
Title: Managing Director of AZ
Years at SAEC: 5 Years
Birthday: September 1st
Tell us about yourself.
I grew up in Hillsboro, MO, which is a small town 30 miles south of St. Louis, and where my parents still live. I went to Hillsboro High School (it's a St. Louis thing) and graduated from Kansas State University with a BS in Architectural Engineering, where I met my wife, Emily. We have two beautiful daughters and a dog named Remi (lab/pit bull mix).
I am the inaugural and reigning SAEC Jousting Champion. (Editors Note: There's only been one competition and I'm still waiting for my rematch!) I walked on to the KSU Football program my Freshman year. My favorite food (and my birthday dinner request) is macaroni and cheese, peas, and ground beef all mixed together. I enjoy deer hunting. I can sing the duet from Zombies (Disney) with my oldest daughter.
How did you first learn about SAEC?
I first heard about SAEC from Kregg Kraus. He and I had worked together in a past life, so when I was looking for a change, Kregg was the first one that I called.
What is your proudest moment at SAEC?
There are several that I could have picked, but I would have to say that the proudest moment would have to be shooting a dart on to Rob Lamprecht's desk with a nerf gun from almost 100 feet away while he was on the phone.
If you could pick one theme for SAEC to turn into a book about the company, what would it be?
"Bounce House Shenanigans"
Name your favorite movie or TV show quote.
There are a lot of great one-liners. I would say "You can't handle the truth" (A Few Good Men) and "Everything is Awesome" (Lego Movie) are some of the top ones. And you’re welcome for now getting that song stuck in your head...
What is a random fact that most may not know about you?
I am an avid fantasy football player/commissioner and participate in 4-5 leagues each year.
If given a chance, who would you like to be for a day?
ESPN NFL Fantasy Football Analyst
If you could witness any historical event, what would you want to see?
Watching the construction of the Pantheon.
What book did you last read?
Completed, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People (again). Currently reading, 168 Hours.
What children's character can you relate with most and why?
Mr. Incredible. I sit here and go through my "day job", but then go home to "save the world" when one of the kids' toys breaks or they find some other "impossible" task that they can't complete.
What have you always wanted to try but never have?
Going to Bora Bora.
What is the last clean joke you recall?
Kids: "Knock, knock."
Me: "Who's there?"
Kids: "Knock, knock."
(Kids laughing hysterically)
Where is the best place you have traveled to and why?
Nantucket for our honeymoon.
What is the weirdest thing you have on your desk?
Two Coconuts, which are remnants of my welcome back from sabbatical.
If you could learn to do anything, what would it be?
Speak Spanish (or another language fluently). It is amazing to see people go from speaking English to Spanish just like flipping a switch.
